It is narrated in a Hadith in Saheeh Bukhari:
اَلتَّلْبِيْنَةُ مُجِمَّةٌ لِفُؤَادِ الْمَرِيْضِ تَذْهَبُ بِبَعْضِ الْحُزْنِ
“Talbeena soothes the sick person and does away with (his) depression.”
(Narrated – Bukhari and Muslim)
What is Talbeena?
Talbeena is a thin mixture of barley flour and water. The word Talbeena is derived from ‘laban’ i.e. milk because it resembles milk in whiteness and in its thin flowing consistency. Talbeena is extremely beneficial for the sick person provided it is cooked and thin, not thick and raw.
The difference between Talbeena and barley water.
Talbeena has the same properties as barley water, in fact the Arabs have it in place of barley water. The difference between barley water and Talbeena is that barley water is made from whole barley and grain while Talbeena is made from barley flour. Talbeena is more beneficial than barley water because the effectiveness of barley grains are enhanced after grinding. It is the practice of some nations to cook barley flour rather than barley grain in water. This is far more nutritious and makes the complexion glow.
Talbeena – A cure for depression.
It has been narrated in the Hadith about Talbeena that it is a cure for depression. This is because depression and anxiety have a lowering effect on the natural heat of the body, as a result of which the heart becomes weak. Talbeena provides vitality and dispels depression by generating heat in the body.
Herbal practitioners claim that a depressed person is afflicted by dryness in his organs which causes weakness especially if the depressed person is prone to starving himself causing the digestive organs to be afflicted by dryness. Talbeena provides these organs with moisture, strength and nutrition. This in turn revitalizes and strengthens the heart. Talbeena results in the smooth functioning of the digestive system.
How to prepare Talbeena?
The recipe of Talbeena is as follows:
Mix two tablespoons barley flour into ¾ litre of water, add sugar to taste and bring to boil. Honey can be used as a sweetener instead of sugar but it must be added after removing from the heat. Allow the Talbeena to cook on a low flame for five minutes after the initial boil. Add milk when it cools down. Talbeena should be taken as per requirement.
Healthy people can also use Talbeena as it will be equally beneficial for them. It is a pity that we use expensive products like ‘Ensure’ as food for the sick although the Prophetic recipe is far more beneficial and far less expensive.
